Sam Karamaga, a student at the National University of Rwanda (NUR), and Fiona Kamikazi, from School of Finance and Banking (SFB), were on Saturday night, crowned Mr. and Miss East Africa University, Rwanda edition respectively, at Kigali Serena Hotel.

Karamaga and Kamikazi out-competed 12 other contestants from different universities to emerge the winners. They walked away with a TV set each, among other prizes.

The venue almost gutted to fire when the MC announced the presence of former Youth and Sports Minister, Joseph Habineza.

The guest of honour, Minister of Youth, Protais Mitali, urged the finalists to develop more confidence and knowledge to win at the regional level.

The contestants did well the catwalk but many failed to answer the questions in English. One of the scenarios was when one of the judges put a question to a contestant in broken English and the respondent answered in the same measure:  "What broughted you here…?” the contestant replied: "I camed here to participate.”

Four finalists (two girls and two boys) will proceed to the regional contest due in May in Dar-es-Salam, where they will compete with other contestants from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi.

Rwanda’s ambassador to Belgium, Robert Masozera, was among the dignitaries who attended the event.
Artists, Kitoko, Kamishi, Uncle Austin, as well comedian, Ndahiro entertained the audience.
