The move by the Ministry of Health to double the number of doctors operating in the field, as announced by the Minister of Health, is a practical and timely intervention on part of government, to further improve health care provision in the country.

According to the minister, it will be done by integrating skills training into a competence based and student centred curriculum.

We have a health insurance policy that has been globally lauded as a great model for availing affordable health care.

Therefore the move to improve the ratio of doctors to patients is part of the wider vision for the country’s health sector that should be supported by all who have a stake for the wellbeing of our population.

It is also of great importance, that more efforts are dedicated to the training of specialist doctors.

This will certainly help to reduce the waiting time of patients before they are able to see physicians in cases that are not classified as emergencies, yet requiring intervention of specialists.

Continuous education of doctors to keep abreast of new developments in the medical field is yet another important undertaking that cannot be ignored as we seek to continuously improve the health sector.
