The Cabinet on Wednesday named the roundabout next to the newly opened Embassy of the United States after Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

On Tuesday, President Paul Kagame promised his US counterpart George Walker Bush that the government would soon consider the US Ambassador Michel Arietti’s suggestion to name the roundabout after the late American civil rights activist.

"The Cabinet meeting has approved that the roundabout between the Ministry of Infrastructure and the American Embassy be named after Martin Luther King Junior,” part of Wednesday’s meeting minutes state.

President Kagame on Tuesday joined Bush in inaugurating the new Kacyiru-based US Embassy premises, and during his remarks, said: "I wish to concur with Ambassador Arietti that the roundabout outside this embassy should carry the name of the great American civil rights leader, Martin Luther King.”

President Bush, accompanied by his wife Laura, was in the country as part of his five-nation African tour which ended yesterday with a stop in Liberia.
