Editor,

I totally support the Governor of the Eastern Province, Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, who has asked the heads of farmers’ cooperatives to take responsibility for the mismanagement of  funds they were in charge of.

Members of these cooperatives are supposed to be at the forefront of protecting their interests against any form of mismanagement and embezzlement.

Many farmers have complained of mismanagement of their funds by greedy leaders. What hurts most is that some of these corrupt leaders have managed to get away with it.

I also wonder how someone heading a cooperative can just disappear with farmers’ money, without trace.
Like the Governor instructed, district mayors should work closely with the police and members of the cooperatives.

I am sure, once mayors and police work together; we shall have all these culprits arrested.

An audit by Rwanda Cooperative Agency (RCA), last year, indicated that over Rwf9.5 million, was mismanaged in UDAMACO, a farmers’ cooperative union located in Kayonza, Gatsibo and Nyagatare districts. This should not happen again.
