Attendance matters most

In her song "Love don’t cost a thing,” artist Jennifer Lopez dated a man who thought money was the rationale for love. He neither attended his girlfriend’s birthday nor was he present on any special day of her life; BUT he sent very expensive presents all the time.

"All that matters is that you treat me right, and give me all the things that money can’t buy…my love doesn’t cost a thing, even if you were broke,” are excerpts from Jennifer Lopez’s song.

Relating Lopez’s song to wedding contributions is not far fetched. Her boyfriend saw wealth and gifts as the golden key to any woman’s heart. Here is why attendance is more precious than wedding contributions;

Logically, couples start wedding arrangements after they have saved for the big day. In this 20th century, people want classy honeymoons, wedding gowns and cannot depend on contributions to have this.

It’s unbelievable that some people have the nerve to name a sum that contributors can’t go below! Who will benefit more from your marriage? Anyway, how will you sustain your family if you can’t even sponsor your own wedding?
I am not rude, these are basics that any committed couple should plan for. It’s better to make a wedding that fits within your small budget than rely on contributions you are not even sure of getting. Cut your coat according to your cloth.

A scenario: You have to choose between your mother attending or a wedding contribution that will only buy you a pair of shoe that will eventually wear out. You would definitely want your mother to attend your big day. People who matter should attend, even when they have nothing to contribute.

And who says all contributions are genuine?  Some are determined to miss out on your wedding hence define their absence with a few bucks. On the contrary, people attend weddings with genuine love.

There are no weddings without people. A ceremony with a church full of presents instead of people would be such a joke!

I cannot keep wondering why the world is diverting to dollar signs. Burial, birthday parties, weddings, nothing is free anymore. What happened to a culture where people freely ate and made merry on all the above functions, without a price tag.  Attendance matters more than the money.
