A delegation from Singida District in central Tanzania is here to learn from the country’s experience in the school nutrition programme.

The aim of the visit is to improve on a similar programme in Singida District.

The school nutrition programme is implemented by the Ministry of Education with financial and technical support from the World Food Programme in partnership with UN agencies, NGOs and local communities.

The eleven-member team is led by the Executive Director of Singida District, Illuminata Mwenda.

"The delegation will visit six schools that are implementing the programme and meet officials of concerned ministries, local authorities and schools committees,” says a WFP news release.

"They will discuss the best practices and challenges related to the programme implementation.”

Upon arrival, Mwenda explained that the purpose of their visit is to share experiences and learn best practices related to the school nutrition management, supervision, monitoring and evaluation.

The school nutrition programme provides daily hot lunch to 350,000 pupils in 300 primary schools in Rwanda.

This is done with the aim of contributing to the Government’s programme of education for all.

The programme has contributed to the tremendous reduction of school drop-out rate, from 21 percent in 2003 to less than one percent in 2010 in all schools under this programme.
