NYAGATARE—The Ministry of Trade and Industry will soon help Nyagatare milk plant improve its production.
The plan was announced on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Emmanuel Hategeka, during a meeting with livestock farmers from Kayonza, Gatsibo and Nyagatare districts.

According to Hategeka, the funding is part of the ministry’s vision to transform the plant into an international supplier of milk products.

"There is a lot to process from milk. This plant only deals with very a few products. We want to facilitate you to produce other products like cheese and milk tablets that can compete on the international market,” he promised.

The director of the milk plant, Cyliro Sinayobye, said the centre receives milk from different collection centers which it sells in different markets.

However, John Mugabo, the new Mayor of Kayonza District, said that the plant has no capacity to collect milk from all the collection centers in his district. He underscored the need to set up other branches in the district.

"It is difficult for farmers in Kayonza to supply their milk to the main plant. I request Savanna milk plant to set up a branch in the district to help our farmers,” he prayed.

Currently, farmers supply over 25, 000 liters of milk to Nyagatare Savannah dairy everyday.
