Allow me to comment on the story that appeared in yesterday’s issue of The New Times, under the title: "Namibian MPs here on study tour”.

It’s really good news to learn that Namibian MPs are travelling all the way from their country to learn from Rwanda’s achievements on gender issues with the aim of adopting our country’s pro-women policies.

In Africa, women bear responsibility for meeting basic needs of their families, yet they are systematically denied resources and freedom of action in order fulfil their  responsibilities.

However, our country has stood firm and supported the empowerment of women in all spheres of life. Studies show that when women are supported and empowered, all members of society benefit. Their families become healthier and more children go to school. Agricultural productivity improves and incomes go up. In short, communities become more self-reliant.

Africa should emulate  Rwandan leaders in formulating gender sensitive laws.
