KIGALI- A group of Namibian parliamentarians is in Rwanda to learn from the country’s achievements in gender equality, with an aim of replicating the country’s pro-women policies and practices in their own nation.

The four-member team is led by Silvia Makgone, the deputy chairperson for Namibian Gender Committee.

Yesterday, the MPs met with their Rwandan counterparts as well as officials of the Gender Monitoring Office (GMO), who took them through the factors that have contributed to the country’s exemplarily performance in gender issues.

"Rwanda is simply the best when it comes to gender issues. They have a reputation of achieving whatever they set their eyes on and we want to learn from them,” Makgone said after their meeting with a group of Rwandan legislators.

Earlier, the delegation met with Odda Gasinzigwa, the head of the National Gender  Monitoring Office, who spoke widely on the steps the country took to empower women, including formulation and enforcement of gender sensitive laws, such as the 30 percent constitutional threshold for women at all leadership levels; and the law on succession, which provides for equal rights between boys and girls.

She also cited a spirited national campaign against gender based violence and all prejudices that put girls and women at a disadvantage as well as other programmes that empower women economically.
