KIGALI - The Government, through the Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs, on Saturday, donated items worth millions of francs to the victims of heavy rains that recently caused havoc in Rukomo Sector, Nyagatare District.

According to the acting Permanent Secretary in Ministry, Capt. Damascene Kayitana, the beneficiaries were selected based on how they were affected.

"There were victims who badly needed assistance compared to others; a committee identified those who needed the support most,” Kayitana said.
Eighty-three families received plastic sheeting, blankets and soap.

It’s estimated that over 339 families were left homeless after heavy rains devastated parts of the province.
Various stakeholders including several government ministries, Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Rwanda Defense Force (RDF) are scheduled to meet, today, to devise possible mechanisms of helping the affected residents.

Kayitana further cautioned the population against constructing houses in wetlands and hilly areas.
