Rusizi-Rubavu road construction Kicks off

The construction of the Rusizi-Rubavu highway has finally began and is expected to be completed in three year’s time.The 170KM road is part of the government program to have the road network in the Western Province upgraded. Already, Rubavu town is working on its roads that stretch to the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The construction of the Rusizi-Rubavu highway has finally began and is expected to be completed in three year’s time.The 170KM road is part of the government program to have the road network in the Western Province upgraded.

Already, Rubavu town is working on its roads that stretch to the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"We are registering impressive progress in improving the roads network in the Western Province. Most of the roads are being worked on,” said Marie Claire Mukasine, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure.

He identified current partners helping to construct the road as the African Development Bank and the Arabic Fund, but added that negotiations are ongoing with the World Bank while the Chinese have also shown interest.

The government is also planning to build docking sites on Lake Kivu so that water transport can also be enhanced.
"This road will connect both Burundi and DRC to Rwanda hence improving trade among the three countries,” said Mukasine.

Other major roads in the district being worked on include Ngororero- Rubavu, Karongi-Muhanga which will promote tourism and business in the western province.
