KIGALI - The Senate, yesterday, unanimously approved the Wild Life Bill providing for the compensation of victims of stray wild animals.The bill was previously contested by some lawmakers for lack of clarity, especially the exclusion of children from compensation.

Presenting the amended draft to the Senate, the Chairperson of the committee in charge of Security, Sen. Valens Munyabagisha, said in case the victim is a minor, their parents or guardians will process the compensation.

He explained that in case of death, the victim’s next of kin would receive the compensation while the injured would be compensated upon presentation of a medical report.
The bill stipulates that a person whose property has been destroyed by wild animals will be asked to produce proof of ownership before compensation.

Meanwhile, a draft law establishing a fund for victims of motor-vehicles and animal accidents, was returned to the Committee for further consultations and scrutiny.
The decision was reached after the legislators contested some of the sections in the draft.
