MUHANGA—Women groups in Muhanga have committed to join efforts towards the elimination of thatched houses in the district.

The women the resolution  after constructing a new house for a genocide survivor in Kanyinya cell, Muhanga sector, last Wednesday  as part of activities to mark the International Women’s day.

The group laid a foundation for a three roomed house for Jacques Nyandwi and his wife Leonia Yankurije, who have been living in a grass thatched house.

They were joined by district leaders and other stakeholders grouped under the drive targeting eradicating such structures drawn from Muhanga and Kigali.

District Mayor, Yvonne Mutakwasuku, noted that 260 houses have already been constructed, adding that government will support the beneficiaries with building materials by the end of this month.

She hailed the women for giving outstanding examples in community development and working towards sustainable development in the area.

"It is evident that our women are seeking better livelihoods thereby becoming critical actors in the growth of the community. This is a way to social transformation and we should support more women initiatives,” she stated.

The beneficiaries of  the drive against thatched houses noted that community contribution was helpful as a sign of solidarity against fighting poverty in society. "This act of charity will help us to be part of community development as we seek to transform our society,” Leonia Yankurije one of the beneficiaries said.

Members of the national women’s council in Muhanga, also awarded certificates to 15 women who successfully completed training in Information and Communication Technology.

During the same event various women gave testimonies of how their lives have been  transformed after acquiring various skills .
