Nyabihu — A visiting official of United Nations office in Rwanda has commended the government’s 9-year basic education system, describing it as a model worth emulating in other African countries.
Dr. Joseph Foumbi, made the remarks in Nyabihu district, where he attended the Imbuto Foundation awarding ceremony of the best performing girls in last year’s national exams on Tuesday.
"Nine Year Basic Education has increased enrolment in schools and the removal of school fees by Government has been an incentive too,” said Foumbi.
He added that, with Government meeting its targets in education sector earlier than planned, the UN reaffirms its support to help improve quality of education in the country.
Dr. Foumbi also assured Imbuto Foundation of UNICEF’s continuous support, noting that the organization directly impacts positively on the girls school enrolment, attendance and learning achievements.
"The Government has done a great job in construction of 6,000 classrooms (for the 9YB Education) along with 10,000 latrine cubicles between 2009 and 2011,” said Foumbi.
