The proposal by the Ministry of Local Government to distribute 700,000 iron sheets to vulnerable Rwandans under the Anti-Nyakatsi programme is a welcome development that must be supported by all of us.

However, I wish to appeal to the Ministry to ensure that after the iron sheets have been distributed, a monitoring team is in place to ensure that the iron sheets are delivered to deserving beneficiaries.

Complaints have emerged in the past whereby iron sheets meant for the vulnerable ended up helping those with the means. In the audit report by the Ministry of Local Government last year, iron sheets meant for genocide survivors ended up in the hands of rich families.

Yes, the  Local Government Ministry’s idea is fantastic but they should not sit back after the iron sheets have been sent to the districts.
