NYAGATARE- Teachers and headmasters from selected secondary schools in Nyagatare District are being trained on the use of internet and other online communication applications with the aim of strengthening cooperation between Rwandan and UK schools.

The programme has been dubbed ‘Connecting Classrooms.’

Financed by the British Council, the programme targets Rwandan schools that are in partnership with schools in the UK and Ugandan schools from neighbouring Bushenyi district.

According to organisers of the training, Connecting Classrooms, nurtures lasting partnerships between schools in the UK and others around the world.

The beneficiary schools in Nyagatare include Mirama Secondary School, Rwisirabo and SOPEM Rukomo Secondary School.

Louis Mustafa, the coordinator of the programme said: "Without internet, it would not have been easy for our schools to connect with those in the UK. This training is useful because they will be accessing online information.”

He added that the partnership enhances exchange of ideas and skills to promote quality education.

During the training held at SOPEM Rukomo, the district Director of Education, Martin Hakizimana, stated that connecting classrooms programme has led to tremendous impact in schools.

"Our schools are equipped with ICT materials like computers, digital cameras and internet modems,” he said.

Gerard Ndagijimana, a teacher from Rwisirabo secondary school, said that he would apply the skills acquired from the training to improve communication with his UK counterparts.
