I read with excitement news about MTN’s move to scrap cross-border roaming charges for its customers while in Uganda, South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland and Zambia.

The decision is sensible since other regional operators like Airtel, MTN Uganda and UTL already don't charge roaming fees. The charges had become a burden to Rwandans and a communication barrier.

It was really hard to afford Rwf60 per minute charge for just receiving a call. I was calling a friend in Uganda recently over a business project. Every time I called, he complained that MTN was eating into his pockets. I am sure the decision will attract many clients now.

Yes, the new development means that MTN subscribers will now be able to move freely across these regional countries making calls and sending SMS at local rates, and receiving calls free of charge.
