THREE-time league champions Lions de Fer will stage a 7s-aside rugby tournament this Saturday to honour the International Women’s Day.
According to Lions de Fer coach Jean de la Paix Hategekimana, the one-day event will be staged at Rugunga grounds and will attract both male and female sides.
Remera Rukoma, Notre dame, Emeru, St.Paul, Shyogwe and Lions de Fer will compete in the women category while the men’s contest pits defending league champions Remera Buffaloes against Sharks, Gorillas, Lions de Fer and Muhanga.
Hategekimana told Times Sport that they want to popularize the game among women in the country and the tourney will be annual.
"We are looking at ways of developing women rugby. Part of that will be to organize many tourneys.”Hategekimana said.
Lions de Fer was a force to reckon with between 2004 and 2007 but has since dropped to the lower half of the league table.
This year’s league will start at the end of April.
