KAYONZA- Police are investigating a case in which a 28-year-old man is alleged to have defiled a 13-year-old schoolgirl.

According to Police, the suspect, Aimable Butera, was arrested with the girl in hotel room at the Gahini Parish Guest - Seeds of Peace.

CIP Richard Rubagumya, Kayonza District Police Commander said the police reacted after a tip-off from hotel management.

"The child gave us rehearsed answers that she was a sister to the suspect...I had to call local leaders back in their village to prove the story,” he said.
Rubagumya noted that it took time to determine whether the young girl was the sister.

"We sensitized hotels and lodges to alert us in case they suspect such incidences. This is what they did, and I am happy with the hotel management.”

Odile Uwimuwe, a waitress at the hotel told The New Times that she was sceptical when she saw a young girl with a man booking in a room.

What called for suspicion, Uwimuwe said, was that the suspect declined to follow the procedures for booking rooms.

"The man evaded the normal procedures of securing a room...he instead gave me money to pay but I couldn’t stomach what I sensed,” the waitress said.
"I told my manager who went straight in the room and found the two intimately in a bed.”

Beatrice Nyinawumuntu, 28, the wife of the accused, said she was baffled when she heard that her husband was caught.

Nyinawumuntu identified the girl as someone the family had looked after since she was two years old.
"The child was supposed to be back from school by noon, but was nowhere to be seen,” Nyinawumuntu added. The suspect faces up to 20 years in jail if found guilty.
