RWANDA is expected to send nine athletes to Punta Umbria, Spain to compete in the 39th World Cross Country Championship.

The team is being handled by Eric Karasira, who is a temporary replacement for Jean Pierre Ernzen, who was sacked last month on grounds of indiscipline.

According to the federation, the team is expected to start residential training in Ruhengeri before the end of this week.

The athletes gearing to make an impression in Spain include Slyvain Rukundo, Jean Baptista Simuceka, Godfrey Rutayisire, Pierre Mvuyekure, Gervais Hakizimana, two-time Olympian Epiphanie Nyirabarame, Claudette Mukasakindi and Jacqueline Murekatete.

According to the Secretary General of the local athletics federation (RAF) Constantine Twajamahoro, it is a good opportunity for the athletes to showcase their ability.

"Last year, we were unable to compete so this is a good opportunity for the guys to give it their all,” said Twajamahoro.
