A team of inspectors from the Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS), Thursday, closed three bakeries in Musanze town due to poor sanitation. 

During a three-day inspection of small scale processing industries and shops, the RBS also seized over 50 jerry cans of honey imported from Tanzania.

The RBS, industry inspection/market surveillance, team was accompanied by the local authorities to asses the quality of products on sale, validity, hygiene, labelling and weighing machines used by traders in Musanze town markets.

"Its part of the routine work to safeguard the health and safety of consumers by monitoring the standards of products on the market,’’ Shukur Bizimungu, the head of Industry Inspection, explained.

He noted that there was a big improvement regarding sale of genuine products, safe storage of food products without mixing them with other non consumables, especially in shops.

Dealers of juice and bread were asked to indicate correct labels showing the ingredients of the packed juice, expiry dates and must also have receipts from the suppliers.

Authorised traditional herbalists were also ordered to clearly package their drugs and stop using bottles of other products.

Meanwhile, the officials disrupted the treatment of three patients who had lined up for consultation and treatment Samuel Nyakarundi’s traditional herbalist shop, , who claims to be a specialist in using the herbs and healing chronic diseases.

His drugs were also seized.
