Editor,
I wish to commend the Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS) for carrying out investigations to establish whether Daily Fry edible cooking oil is fit for human consumption.
if the oil is found to be harmful for human consumption, the RBS should not only expose the importers but have them charged.
RBS should also investigate reports that several other products imported from neighboring countries are either substandard or unfit for human consumption.
In 2009, a container full of expired tomato sauce was imported. Surprisingly, before it was ordered back to the country of origin, an official from RBS had cleared the container and allowed the businessman to put the products on the market. It was only re-exported after the intervention of quality Assurance Unit officials.
RBS should have a mechanism that will detect expired goods without waiting to be alerted by the consumers.
