KIGALI - Kigali City Council has embarked on a plan to get permanent trading areas for all hawkers in the city.

It is estimated that more than 6,500 hawkers operate in Kigali City.

Jacques Basenga, an official in charge of rural development in KCC, said that they have begun to prepare designated sections for hawkers in the districts of Kigali city.

"KCC has a target of getting permanent working places for at least 2,000 hawkers in every district of Kigali City before the end of June this year, we are working round the clock to achieve this goal,” Basenga said.

He pointed out that they are working on 1,300 partitions at Biryogo mini-market and 200 stands at Gitega market were under construction in Nyarugenge District.

Meanwhile, he said that KCC, together with police, have stopped chasing hawkers on the streets of Kigali City until the construction of the selling points is completed.

He said that the Ministry of Public Service and Labour (MIFOTRA) gave KCC Rwf18m to support the project, adding that they expect an additional Rwf50m from the ministry.

Basenga further noted that KCC will organize seminars for the hawkers to teach them how to conduct business in an organized and productive manner.
