KIGALI - The first group of genocide orphans will take residence in the One Dollar Complex by December this year.

The first phase comprises a four-storied hostel which will accommodate about 200 orphans.

The project, that was initiated by the Rwandan Diaspora Global Network (RDGN), aims at providing thousands of Genocide orphans with decent housing.

Speaking to The New Times at the site, the Project Manager, Appolinaire Sayinzoga said that they are working round the clock.

"We have two shifts that are working day and night to meet the deadline,” said Sayinzoga.

He said that the first phase will cost Rwf812m. Murenzi Supply, a locally based construction firm was contracted to do the work.

The project, at full scale, had initially been priced at Rwf 1.5 bn.

It was later scaled up to include other features like the income generating activities and recreation facilities which would contribute to the well being of the students and sustainability of the project.

The project will cost Rwf 5bn upon completion.

Several ministries, government agencies and the private sector pledged money towards the project.

Sayinzoga, however, noted that over Rwf120 million in pledges is yet to be collected.

"We call upon all people who pledged towards the cause to fulfil their promises,” he said, adding that the construction progress should act as surety that the pledged money is being put to its intended use.

He also revealed that they have already submitted the financial report of the project to the Auditor General for scrutiny.

"All this is being done to ensure transparency in the whole project.” he said.

The complex is being constructed on1.5 hectares of land at Kagugu, in Gasabo District donated by city businessman, Egide Gatera.
