KIGALI - The president of the High Court and Principal Judge at the East African Court of Justice (EACJ), Johnston Busingye, has urged judges to enhance professionalism in their work.

Busingye made the remarks during a forum that brought together heads of Primary, Intermediate and the High Courts, countrywide, to assess their performance and forge the way forward.

"The judiciary is the most important institution in rendering justice in this country, judges should, therefore, uphold professionalism for the good of the people,” he said.

Busingye added that justice and a just society are pillars of good governance and, therefore, judges must promote good governance by applying professionalism in their work.

"If our country wants to claim first place, as regards to good governance, justice must be one of the most important pillars to consider,” he told the judges, adding that justice serves a purpose, not an end, and the society should benefit, enjoy and feel protected by the laws.

Busingye pointed out that people’s rights should be jealously guarded and promoted called upon the judges to enhance service delivery and shun all forms of corruption in their respective jurisdictions.

Sam Rugege, the Deputy Chief Justice, advised judges to administer justice according to the values, norms and aspirations of the people of Rwanda.

"Seek ways that will promote efficiency and uniformity, improve the quality of the judicial service and improve judicial conduct in a way that is fair, objective and effective, in order to advance the rule of law in our country,” he noted.
