Ngororero - Over 140 families in Muhororo Sector, Ngororero District, yesterday received a cow each through
the national cattle stocking programme.

It is the second time that the sector benefits from the project which, starting in 2006,
targets 350,000 poor families countrywide by 2013.

"I am very happy to receive this cow and my appreciation goes to the President of this country
for having thought about us,” said Alice Mugwaneza, a beneficiary.

She promised to take good care of the cow, saying it will be a great opportunity for her to get
milk and manure to increase her crop production.

The Director General of Rwanda Animal Resources Development Authority (RARDA), Dr Theogene
Rutagwenda, said beneficiaries had been trained to help them properly look after the animals.

"These trainings equipped beneficiaries with skills on animal health and feeding, they have
also constructed proper shelter to accommodate the cows,” Rutagwenda said.

Sounding confident, the official said that there is still a lot left to be done for the
programme to hit its target.

"So far, we have given out 140,000 cows and the programme will intensify this year,” he said..
