Rwanda, on Tuesday, signed an agreement with COMESA to pave the way for the setting up of a regional air traffic management centre in Musanze district, Northern Province.

The centre  -  Communication Navigation Surveillance /Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM), -  will  offer air traffic control services as well as information on climate change to all the 19 member countries that subscribe to the Common Market for Eastern and Southern African (COMESA).

Rwanda has invested heavily in ICT, and the various developmental projects the country has embarked on, are benefiting from the technological developments.

The massive telecommunications infrastructure coming up at Karisimbi, the site that will host the air traffic, is one example of how Rwandans and the wide region, stand to gain from the promotion of ICT.

According to the COMESA Secretary General, Rwanda was selected to host the centre because of her efforts to promote ICT, in addition to her commitment to regional economic integration.

The advantages of the site are numerous. More employment opportunities, development of surrounding communities, and general increase in revenues from the services the center will offer.

The Government’s ambition for the country to become an ICT hub, may be expensive, however, with the potential benefits, as demonstrated by the Karisimbi project, it is without doubt, a worthwhile investment.
