Construction of a new prison at Butamwa, Nyarugenge district, has begun. The new facility will pave way for the relocation of Kigali Central Prison commonly known as ‘1930’ and eventually Remera Prison in Kimironko.

"The master plan is ready and the tendering process byNyarugenge District authorities is in progress,” the Minister for Internal Security, Musa Fazil Harelimana Harelimana, told The New Times yesterday.

He said that the clearing of the area and road construction is almost complete and is being carried by prisoners..

"They will play a big part in the process. They will build the administrative bloc, kitchen and sanitation facilities,” the minister revealed.

He added that the contractor will mostly be responsible for the construction of the fence with the help of local residents.

The new prison covers at least 100 hectares of land and will reserve space for agricultural activities.

The first phase of the construction works will be completed by the end of this year and will host about 5,000 inmates from 1930 Prison.
