Rwamagana - A bus belonging toONATRACOM hit and killed a 21-year-old girl in Rwamagana town at around 9.am on Friday.

The driver was travelling towards Uswahilini Street, when he realized he had passed his destination near the district hospital, according to an eye witness.

He then put the bus in reverse, said police, and began to back up. The bus then hit the victim, who was on a motor bike, killing her instantly.

The motor cycle driver escaped unhurt.

The driver of the bus, Francis Ndamage, is currently held at Rwamagana police station.

According to Alex Rutabayiru, Rwamagana District Police Commander (DPC), the driver may be charged with various traffic offences.

"He was reversing on a one way, speaking on a phone and reckless before running over a motor cycle. All these are cases under investigation,” he said.

Haled Musoni, an eye witness, also blamed the bus driver for doing so while on phone.

He claimed ONATRACOM bus drivers are reckless, just because they drive government buses.

"I think when driving a bigger vehicle, one should be careful...he was on his phone with colleagues, then he reversed his bus rather swiftly and knocked them on the ground.”

"We shouted before he reached them, but the driver continued reversing and run over the girl, who was not as lucky as the motorcycle rider,” he said angrily.

Jean Claude Murekezi, 45, another eye witness, however, said motor cyclists too, should be extra careful to avoid some accidents.
He said that the motorcycle rider was not cautious enough to save the life of the passenger, but cared only for his.

"This is the second accident involving ONATRACOM bus service in the town in one month.
