Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), yesterday began a five-day tour to assess the state of information and communication technologies within member states.

They are members of the Committee on Communication, Trade and Investment in the regional assembly.

The delegation which is led by Dr James Ndahiro, the chairman of the committee, will establish the impact of ICT development in the region, especially of new infrastructures like the fibre optic cable.

According to a statement from EAC secretariat, the delegation will meet various stakeholders in the ICT sector in all member countries.

The findings of the tour will acquaint EALA members with pertinent facts on the status of ICT development in the region, existing opportunities and challenges associated with the sector.

The Committee is expected to take stock of the observations and recommendations and report back to EALA.

The tour will further devise ways and means of how the environment and human population can be protected against negative effects of the ICT gadgets used in connectivity.
