Twenty six marine officers from the Rwanda National Police (RNP) and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) have graduated after a three-month training at the Marine regiment on Lake Kivu.

The course enables officers to acquire basic marine skills and knowledge, including navigation, swimming and engine maintenance of marine equipment particularly speed boats.

"The three months you spent here were very successful and impressive and will help improve the marine department,” said Emmanuel Butera, the Commissioner of Police in charge of operations.

The course began with 28 officers, but two did not complete. 

"The joint training of RDF and RNP helps to strengthen our partnership since we share objectives and mission,” Butera added.

The marine department is also responsible for combating illegal fishing, stopping illegal migrants and fighting smugglers.

Environmental protection and rescue operations are also part of the duties of marine officers. 

"We congratulate the candidates for successfully completing this course which was both theoretical and practical and exhibiting a high level of discipline,” Lt. Col.

Theodomel Bahizi, the commanding officer of RDF Marine Regiment said.
