KIGALI - UN Goodwill Ambassador for biodiversity, Edward Norton said that Rwanda has set inspiring examples to draw from in his advocacy work.

Norton said this yesterday at the end of his three-day visit which aimed at learning about the work done by Rwandan authorities to ensure sustainable development of its biodiversity.

"As UN Goodwill Ambassador, I aim at helping people realise and understand the importance of biodiversity to economic prosperity, environmental health and our future.

"The commitment and actions of Rwanda on biodiversity and the environment set inspiring example to draw from in my advocacy work,” said Norton, also a famous American filmmaker.

He added that he has long admired efforts made by the government of Rwanda and its people, to safeguard the environment to ensure sustainable development of the country.

During his visit, Norton met with Prime Minister Bernard Makuza and other senior government officials.
He visited the Eastern and Northern Provinces during his stay.

Among the areas covered are the Akagera National Park and the river Nyabarongo catchment where he witnessed high levels of siltation.

He also visited the shores of lakes Cyohoha, Sake and Mugesera in Bugesera district.

The lakes are stabilized by a protection buffer of agro-forestry species, extensions of radical terraces for erosion control and crop intensification.

The Minister for Environment and Lands, Stanislas Kamanzi commended the activist for his outstanding advocacy for the preservation of biodiversity which is an important global agenda.
