Recently, I was looking at the way my brother was busy dressing for an evening out with his friends, and noticed that he is also not left behind in the fashion world.

What I liked the most in all his attire was the way he tied his scarf around the neck – he looked so grown up that I wanted to cry remembering just a few years ago when I was holding his hands taking him to nursery school. I called him and complimented his efforts in self grooming and he went out laughing all the way because he had not expected me to comment.

Scarves have gained popularity since last year and even up to this season, making their way to the top of many trendy fashions. In fact I was very surprised when I saw some young ladies wearing these scarves in Mombassa considering the fact that the place is usually very hot, and then I remembered something that my daughter told me that teenagers say; it is better to be killed by pneumonia than to be caught red handed in a fashion faux pas that is why these are not only worn on a chilly day but fashionable on a hot day as well.

These scarves have also been a fashion statement for celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Rihana and Brad Pitt, not forgetting my fashion icon First Lady Michelle Obama who has been seen many times adorned with this admired accessory.

What a scarf does to an outfit is that it adds flavour and flair to almost any lacking look. Still, however, many people shy away from wearing scarves simply because they do not know how to wear them. If your outfit is lacking in style, just throw in a scarf to update your attire. Even though wearing a scarf is just throwing it in style of your shoulders, one important rule when wearing it is to keep it simple. If dressed in a pattern or printed fabric, a solid colour scarf is all you need. On the other hand, when wearing solid colours do not be afraid to spice up your look with a fun, colourful plaid or bright printed scarf.

Throughout history, scarves have been made from a variety of fabrics - from heavy wool knits to fine silk weaves, patterned or plain - each style appropriate to its setting or the fashion of the period like the scarf of today is the Yasser Arafat Scarf which during his lifetime he wore on his head and was his fashion identity.

Scarves were used to accentuate women’s looks, but today more men are embracing the fashion trend and are not left behind in the world of fashion which includes the scarves as well.  One only needs to use their imagination when wearing a scarf to pull off that killer fashion look.

In the recent past this accessory was overlooked, yet it can offer endless possibilities for enhancing the look of any body’s wardrobe. There are different ways to which one can wear a scarf and pull it off rightly in fashion sense.

It can be worn when folded into half corner by corner, and then the triangle should be laid on the chest with the point facing down as the ends are tied around one’s neck. There is also another way in which this scarf can be worn, which is by  creating a looped effect, the scarf should be folded in a rectangular shape then laid across the back of your neck and let it hang, but leave one side slightly longer than the other. Next, take the side that is longer and wrap it around your neck, moving it around your head in a counter clockwise motion. The scarf should end where you began turning it, now having a loop around the neck and the scarf ends hanging down across the chest on both sides. You can also stop the twist of the scarf end half way and leave one end hanging in front and one end down your back.
