Local gov’t candidates wrap up campaigns

GICUMBI - Candidates for district councils, yesterday conducted their final campaign runs. In Kageyo Sector, the outgoing Mayor of Gicumbi District, Bonane Nyangezi, is competing with two other candidates, while three women are tussling it out for the women sector advisory council seat.

GICUMBI - Candidates for district councils, yesterday conducted their final campaign runs..

In Kageyo Sector, the outgoing Mayor of Gicumbi District, Bonane Nyangezi, is competing with two other candidates, while three women are tussling it out for the women sector advisory council seat.

"I advocated for the installation of a water tanks in Kageyo Sector and promoted terracing to increase agricultural production in the entire district, during my tenure as Mayor,” says Nyangezi, appealing for the electorate to give him a second chance.

He says he would stem poverty, promote health insurance and increase modern livestock farming, if re-elected.
John Nkunzurwanda, an advisor to Rulindo District Mayor, said that once elected, his target will be to extend electricity to all households in Kageyo Sector.

"I will also promote democracy through participatory decision making from village to district level,” said Nkunzurwanda.

Another candidate, Francois Rwagasana, a teacher at Kageyo SOS Children village, asked voters to elect him, saying he would promote education in the entire district.

"Development goes hand in hand with education, which is why adult literacy is needed for all residents to steer economic prosperity,” he said.

Aspirants for women sector advisory council representation reiterated their commitment to promote gender equality if elected.

"I shall promote women rights to property, representation in public and private administrative entities and advocate for women income generating cooperative societies,” said Dancila Mukarugina.

The polls for district council members will take place on Monday.
