The body of a Rwandan studying in China was flown back home on Wednesday. Yves Roland Kurujyiwacu, 27, was found dead at the bank of a river in the Chinese Capital Beijing. He was a second year master’s student at China University of Geosciences.

Kurujyiwacu was reported missing towards the end of December. Chinese authorities discovered his body last week.

"We first heard that he went missing and later we were told that his body was found,” explained Emma Rubagumya, the Director of Students Financing Agency of Rwanda (SFAR), who was sponsoring the student.

Rubagumya said that Chinese authorities are still investigating whether it was suicide or murder.

"We don’t know the cause of the death as per now, but they promised to keep us posted,” said Rubagumya, when asked whether there is any suspected foul play in the student’s death.

A similar incident happened in 2007, when a 23-year-old Phiona Uwase, a Rwandan student at Makerere Business School (MUBS) was found dead at the Kampala-based academic institution.

Her murderers have never been found up to now.
Kurujyiwacu’s body was laid to rest yesterday at Remera Cemetery. He hails from Nyamirambo, a Kigali suburb.
