Musanze- Employers in the private sector is Musanze District are failing to give work contracts to their staff, an official said.

This came to the limelight, Tuesday, during a sensitization workshop on worker’s rights organised by the Ministry of Public service and labour. The workshop was attended by employers and employees from private institutions and civil servants.

"The biggest challenge in Musanze lies in many employers not signing contracts with their employees. Some employees work overtime while other employers don’t bother to save for them through social security fund,’’ said Yves Nkusi, a Labour Inspector in Musanze district.

Nkusi, said there was need for more sensitisation on labour laws to address mistakes committed by employers in dismissing workers.

Employers were challenged to uphold the new ministerial orders, requiring them to offer work contracts and other amenities to workers.

According to Paul Ruzindana, a legal officer in charge of regulation and compliance, the ongoing sensitization programme aims at explaining the law regulating labour.

Ruzindana lamented that some workers in the private sector were working over time without compensation, out of ignorance.

Quoting the labour law, Ruzindana explained that it is against the law for an employee to work beyond 12 hours per day. "In case of extra work beyond 9 hours per day, it requires rest, if not the employee has to be compensated,’’ he stressed.
