Editor,

I wish to respond to James Torero’s letter that appeared in yesterday’s issue of The New Times arguing that the lawyers are considered to be the custodian of the law in our societies.  It’s sad when lawyers turn into violators of the laws they are supposed to protect.

I remember one case that happened in Kigali in 2009, where a city lawyer was arrested trying to bribe a judge at Kagarama Court of Lower Instance in Gikondo.

But good enough, the judge alerted police who immediately arrested this man. Such incidents taint the good name of these learned people. Members of the society expect lawyers to be honest, straightforward and their record should be beyond reproach.

The said lawyer offered about $2000 to the judge to deliver a ruling in favor of his client. Such lawyers must be expelled from the Bar Association.
