22 members from various local security organs yesterday completed a two-week training course in ‘Basic Aviation Security.’

The course, the first of its kind in the country, was held in Kigali and was conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, Canada.

It was carried out under the auspices of the International Aviation Organization mechanism for the effective implementation of standards and recommended practices contained in the convention on the International Civil Aviation.

The trainees came from Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA), Republican Guard officers and Rwanda National Police (RNP).

They also received internationally recognized certificates in aviation security.
Access control, recognition of explosive devices and other restricted articles and building search procedures are some of the topics that were covered during the training.

Others areas covered were patrolling and guarding, screening and searching of passengers and baggage, operating x-ray equipment and protection of aircraft.
Dr. Richard Masozera, the Director General of RCAA said, that the course was vital because the government is investing a lot in the aviation industry.

"This is important to ensure the security of our passengers,” Masozera said. "We are preparing ourselves to be able to counter terrorism threats,” he added.
Last year, the government injected about $1 million in the aviation sector.  Masozera said that the new equipment needs trained and skilled personnel to operate them.

Vincent Karega, the Minister of Infrastructure who presided over the event, urged the trainees to be patriotic in their duties.

Karega observed that security in one of the strongest features in the aviation industry. "Much as we do well at home, we should also do the same internationally,” Karega said.

He added that Rwanda is building the aviation sector. "It’s time to ensure that there are no loose ends in our activities,” said Karega, adding that government will continue to build the aviation sector to the required capacity.
