The French Embassy in Rwanda has announced that it will construct three new facilities on the piece of land it owns in the Central Business District (CBD), Nyarugenge.

The property currently accommodates the French Cultural Centre, which reopened following Rwanda’s restoration of diplomatic ties with France, over a year ago.

This was confirmed by Maurice Brouard, the Director of the French Cultural Centre during an exclusive interview with The New Times.

Brouard explained that this will be done to abide by the Kigali City Master Plan. Only the Auditorium, he said, will not be demolished "but renovated.”

He added that two of the new facilities, will have 11 floors while the third one will be a three-storey building. Some of the facilities will have shopping malls.

The construction, valued at $25 million, will start late this year and be completed in 2013.
Brouard explained that the construction will be carried out by both local and foreign firms.

"We (the embassy, cultural centre and consular) will only occupy a fifth of the 20,000m2 while the remaining part will be left to the investors,” said Brouard.

He also said that buildings will have four training facilities.
There will also be a theatre, valued at Euros 1 million which will help develop local talents. On top of that there will be a library for about 30,000 books.
