Over the weekend, international, regional as well as local artists converged at Cultural Tent near Amahoro stadium in a fundraising concert whose funds will go to the treatment of legendary cultural artist Mzee Sentore.

Sentore, 75, is currently hospitalized at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. He is apparently suffering from poor blood circulation which has also affected his legs and movement.

Among the international artists who performed are Popo Michael from Canada, Belgium-based Jean Marie Muyango, Cecile Kayirebwa and Maria Yohana.

One of the artists, Derinarudinho Rutazibwa, recalled a concert with Sentore in New York that pulled such record attendance earning the latter a two-page review in the New York Times.

All the artists praised Mzee Sentore as a musician who has not only developed the cultural music in the country but also as someone who struggled to elevate the country’s image worldwide in countries such as Spain, Belgium, Britain, Canada and Holland.

His son Intore Masamba, who also performed, lauded his colleagues for having turned up in big numbers to support his father.

"I am happy to see that artists have travelled from far and near while others cancelled their trips and plans to be part of the concert.” he said.

Other cultural groups that were present included Inganzo ngari and Mutabaruka group.

Masamba, in a phone interview, revealed that a similar concert is scheduled in March.
