KIGALI - The Commissioner for Her Majesty Revenue and Customs and the Permanent Secretary for tax of the United Kingdom (UK), Dave Hartnett, yesterday, visited the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) Customs department at Gatuna border post.

Hartnett is in the country for a week-long visit to get firsthand information on how the national tax body operates.

At Gatuna, Hartnett visited various customs offices, including the cashier and vehicle registrations and road maintenance fund payment office.

The office works as the one-stop border post for both Ugandan and Rwandan customs who share office space and scanning equipment to reduce costs of operations.
 He also visited the state-of-the-art equipment used to speed up the scanning processes of cargo.

The scanner was provided with the support of the UK government through the Department for International Development (DFID).

Seth Muhirwa, the Director for Human Resources and Administration in RRA, said that Hartnett’s visit will strengthen the working relationship with the UK and give way to programmes that will further streamline RRA services.

The UK has been helping RRA with capacity building under the framework of ‘Commonwealth Cater Courses’ Muhirwa explained.

He said that they will also sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Her Majesty Customs "to have a stronger link of assisting each other, especially in terms of capacity building.”
