NYAGATARE - Rwanda Development Organisation (RDO) has said it will buy maize from Nygatare farmers at a fixed price, a move that will address the lack of markets and fluctuation of prices that result from bumper harvests
According to Eugene Rwibasira, the head of RDO, the deal will start with this season’s harvest.

"The issue of lack of markets for your maize will be a thing of the past. RDO plans to purchase your products and what we request you to do is produce quality maize,” he said at a meeting with farmers in Nyagatare District.

The decision was reached after maize farmers in the district complained to the government that the lack of markets has affected them.

Rwibasira told the farmers that RDO will do all it can to ensure that all maize is purchased at set price.
RDO promised to set up maize collection centres in various zones across the district, to help farmers avoid travelling long distances to find markets.

He added that RDO plans to sign an agreement with the National Prisons Services to supply maize and other food items.

During the meeting, Nyagatare maize investment Group (NYAMIG) announced that it will also buy maize from farmers as a way of providing constant markets.

Fulgence Mutabaruka, the district agronomist urged farmers to adopt modern farming methods since they are assured of the market.
