Over 2000 litres of “Kanyanga” destroyed

GICUMBI- District officials, Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) and Cyumba Sector residents on, yesterday, destroyed over 2000 litres of illicit brew, locally known as Kanyanga, This was carried out at the conclusion of the anti-drug abuse week.In his address to residents, Gicumbi District coordinator forSocial Affairs, Deogratius Mwanafunzi, called on them to work hand-in-hand with District security organs, to stem the trafficking, sale and consumption of illicit alcoholic drinks and drugs.

GICUMBI- District officials, Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) and Cyumba Sector residents on, yesterday, destroyed over 2000 litres of illicit brew, locally known as Kanyanga,
This was carried out at the conclusion of the anti-drug abuse week.

In his address to residents, Gicumbi District coordinator forSocial Affairs, Deogratius Mwanafunzi, called on them to work hand-in-hand with District security organs, to stem the trafficking, sale and consumption of illicit alcoholic drinks and drugs.

"The consumption of illicit alcoholic drinks and drugs is detrimental to one’s health and retards Rwanda’s quest to realize economic prosperity,” he said.

A representative of the Ministry of Youth, Benoit Gasigwa, cautioned Cyumba and Mukono Secondary School students against indulging in the consumption of illicit alcoholic drinks and drugs. 

"You should promote anti-drug abuse clubs in your respective schools so as to excel in education and grow up as responsible citizens,” advised Gasigwa.
Gicumbi District Police Commander, Superintendent Bertin Rutsindura, cautioned local leaders at village, cell and Sector level against conspiring with dealers in illicit alcoholic drinks and drugs.

The traders are locally referred to as ‘Abarembetsi’.
"Local leaders who shall be caught in the act of aiding Abarembetsi shall face the heavy arm of the law,” said Supt. Rutsindura.
