KIGALI-The Minister of Youth, Protais Mitali, has called upon the general public, especially the youth, to wage a consistent war against drug abuse in the country.

Mitali made the call, yesterday, at Kimisagara Youth Centre during the conclusion of a weeklong anti-drug abuse campaign.

The week which was organized jointly by the Ministry of Youth and Rwanda National Police, was characterized with a variety of activities aimed at sensitizing the youth on the harmful drugs.

The Minister urged schools to form clubs as an initiative to curb illicit drug abuse among the youth in such institutions.
"We should all bear in mind that it is through everyone’s role and will to fight the abuse as well as trafficking that it will be curbed,” he observed.

He further urged parents, guardians and educational institutions to closely monitor the developments of the young generation by directing them through behavioural change.

Religious leaders, NGOs and individual people were urged to include anti-drug abuse in their teachings.
Mitali also appealed to legal institutions to heavily punish those found guilty of dealing in or abusing the drugs.

The Deputy Commissioner General of Police, Stanley Nsabimana, urged the public, particularly the youth as the most affected social group, to join forces with Police in the war against illicit drugs by providing information concerning dealers and abusers.
