EASTERN PROVINCE

GATSIBO — Farmers in Gatsibo district have appealed to the government to help them secure market for their excess maize.

According to Silvestre Gakuru a renowned farmer and distributor of maize seeds in the district, maize yields this season are good owing to abundant rainfall.

Gakuru has a farm in Kabarore sector; provides maize seeds and teaches farmers ways of restoring soil fertility. He also teaches proper farming techniques for farmers to increase their produce.

"Because of improved quality maize seeds, there has been an increase in the crop yields and now farmers have a task of securing market for their surplus maize,” Gakuru said. He suggested that getting them local buyers would be appropriate to minimise the cost of transport.

The quality seeds that they planted were obtained from Rwanda Agriculture Development Authority [RADA] and multiplied in the district. This season the district will reserve 30 tons of quality maize seeds to be planted by farmers next season.
