Prosecutors have been cautioned against making mistakes in their work because it undermines the work of the institution.

The call was made yesterday by the Prosecutor General, Martin Ngoga, during a general assembly of the National Public Prosecution Authority (NPPA).

"Mistakes, though few, give our opponents and the country’s critics the reason to undermine us,” Ngoga said.
He cited two categories of mistakes: "Some are due to lack of capacity while others are committed intentionally,” adding that NPPA will continue to help those who lack ability through training while the other category will be disciplined.

In his advice to the gathered prosecutors, the High Court President, Justice Johnston Busingye, called for professionalism.

"We need to be independent and impartial,” Busingye said, adding that guidelines on how much investigations should be carried out before arrests are made, should be put in place..

He noted that the number of people prosecuted while out of detention should increase because it is a sign of good governance.

"There should be enough reason why a suspect should be prosecuted while in detention,”
he said.
