KARONGI - A police officer from Rutsiro District has been remanded for 30 days to pave way for investigations into an alleged defilement case.

Karongi intermediate court, yesterday, ruled that former Intelligence Officer (IO), Gaspard Rwegeranya, cannot be released until DNA results from medical tests that were taken last month are available.

"Given the sensitivity of the case and being a well trained police officer who knows what the law stipulates, we cannot trust that you will not skip bail,” Rwegeranya was told before a fully packed courtroom by presiding judge Adolphe Udahemuka.

This was the final appeal case in which the police officer repeatedly denied the accusations claiming the charges are trumped up by people who are not happy with his role in the unearthing of a corruption scandal in which top district officials were suspected of embezzling public funds.

A month ago, Rwegeranya discovered that Jean Pierre Nsabimana, the former Executive Secretary of The National Youth Council at the district, stole over Rwf3.5million and recent reports also implicated former Mayor, Jean Ndimubahire.
