Rwamagana - The Minister of Internal Security, Fazil Harerimana, has commended Nsinda Prison for its self reliance program.

During his tour of the development projects of the Prison, the minister visited a 400-hectare farm of maize, avocadoes and vegetables in Rwamagana District.

"This is great production...we want prisons to be self reliant and able to produce surplus for sale. The biogas project will be enhanced and supplemented, so that there is no more destruction of trees for fuel,” he said, yesterday.

Harerimana, encouraged prison authorities to utilise all its arable land for production.

He warned farmers, who settle illegally on prison land, saying that they will be evicted.

"A man was paid Rwf70 million to leave Prison land, but he refused. I promise that I am ending the saga in a fortnight,” he warned.

The Commissioner General of Prisons, (CGP), Mary Gahonzire, said the production process is going well.
"Production structures are well set, which is why we can boast of huge production. For instance, we are going to get over Rwf 400 million from maize this season,’ she said.

Yvan Habimana, the Director of Nsinda Prison, said that after the increase of production, the inmates’ diet would improve.

"There is a very big garden of cabbages and other greens that will improve the quality of food we serve to the inmates. It has just started and very soon this will be an exemplary prison,” he said.

Nsinda prison has 8,118 inmates, including 346 women.
