Over 2500 civil servants from various government institutions in Musanze district have earmarked 5 percent of their salary, worth Rwf8 million, towards the eradication of thatched houses commonly known as "Nyakatsi”.

The resolution was made Wednesday, at the district headquarters after a joint consultative meeting to evaluate progress in eradication of "Nyakatsi”.

The meeting drew workers from all levels, including schools and health facilities. The District Executive Secretary and Acting Mayor, Emmanuel Rutaremara, challenged the workers to own the process of eradicating such structures.

‘’We have a responsibility to set the precedent, mobilize the residents to get fully involved in supporting one another. This meeting therefore reminds every stakeholder in the district including the private sector, NGOs, and well wishers to support the completion of better housing for the poor’’ Rutaremara said.

A bank account will be opened, where the workers’ contributions can be deposited.

During the meeting, it was announced that the district intends to sign contracts with farmers, requiring the farmers to stock their produce in district’s warehouses pending marketing.
