NYAGATARE - A dozen families in Rwimiyaga sector, Nyagatare district are homeless after heavy rains destroyed their houses. The most affected places are Ntoma, Rwimiyaga and Nyendo cells.

Residents told The New Times that the downpours were characterized by strong winds that ripped off roofs.

"It started around 2pm. We were in the house when part of the roof flew off. We ran out to our neighbours for shelter”, Jerome Sekamana, one of the affected residents, recalls.

Most affected residents sought refuge at neighbours and friends.

Immediately after the weather cleared up some residents started to repair their damaged houses, said Rwimiyaga sector executive secretary, Celestin Muyango.

He stated: "We are working tirelessly to seek support for those who sought refuge with their neighbours. Requests for help reached already the province.”
